Guided by a master artisan specialized in the traditional art of Lecce papier-mâché, this hands-on workshop takes place in an authentic artisan studio, where you will discover the secrets and techniques of this centuries-old craft and create your own piece.

The experience begins with a brief introduction to the history of papier-mâché, along with an overview of the materials, methods, and stages of production. This is followed by a step-by-step practical demonstration and, finally, the creation of your own handcrafted object to take home at the end of the workshop.

Papier-mâché is a fascinating and ancient art form, born in the narrow streets of Lecce’s historic center and passed down from father to son since the 18th century in the workshops of master sculptors and artisans.

The works are crafted using sheets of paper soaked in glue — known locally as ponnula — prepared with hot water, flour, and a small amount of copper sulfate.

The process follows precise stages. A rough body shape is first formed around a wire framework using straw, carefully bound with twine. Clay is then used to model the finer details and joints. Once the glue has been absorbed, the paper is shaped by hand to soften it and give it a fabric-like texture. Small heated tools are used to refine the forms of the statues in a phase known as fuocheggiatura. The process concludes with plastering, smoothing, and finally oil painting, bringing the piece to life.
